How much water should a 24-hour emergency kit have?
FEMA calls for 2-liters of hydration water and 1.8 liters of utility (cleaning) water.
This commercial kit carries 2.0 liters of ready-to-drink hydration water.
As the table below shows, most kits do not provide 2.0 liters of hydration per day.
Day one of a 72-hour plan (extendable)
FEMA's guidance is 72 hours. This kit supplies the first 24 of those hours. Stockpiled food, water and hygiene carry a holder to days two and three; campus resources — showers, cafeterias, dining — come back after the chaos of day one. This is the day-one box: take this kit, go wait in your car, we will notify you.
Aligns with OSHA 1910.38 emergency action planning, which requires a written plan and a way to account for people. No federal or state authority requires an employer to stockpile emergency water.
What this kit is not
- Not a 72-hour or 3-day kit. One person, one day.
- Not a first aid kit. No bandages, medication or trauma supplies.
